Project Summary
An Ellijay vacation home owner near Cartecay River wanted a 65-inch TV mounted on the cabin's interior log wall in the great room. Log walls present unique challenges — the curved surface of each log means standard flat-mount brackets don't sit level, and the dense hardwood requires different drilling techniques than drywall or masonry. A tilt mount was selected to angle the screen toward the stone-hearth seating area.
Installation Details
The log wall was constructed from 8-inch diameter pine logs with a clear sealant finish. We selected a mounting location where two logs provided a relatively flat surface area. Custom-machined steel spacer plates were used to bridge the curved log surface and create a level mounting plane. The tilt mount was through-bolted — lag bolts penetrate completely through the log and are secured with steel backing washers on the opposite side for maximum holding strength. This through-bolt technique is essential for log walls because the bolt's holding power comes from compression across the full log diameter rather than thread grip alone.
Professional Techniques Used
A long-shaft drill bit bored completely through the 8-inch log at each of the four anchor points. Grade 5 carriage bolts with large fender washers on the backing side distribute the load across the log's surface. The wire concealment route follows the chinking line (the sealed gap between logs) — we carefully removed a section of chinking, laid the cable in the channel, and re-sealed with matching chinking compound. The result is a cable path that's invisible unless you know exactly where to look. The log's natural expansion and contraction with temperature changes was accounted for by using slightly oversized bolt holes with rubber grommets.
